Verbena Health
www.verbenahealth.org
Verbena is a non-profit organization for lesbians, bi-sexual and queer women, and transgendered individuals. They focus on building community through health advocacy, education, support services and access to care. “Vision & Voice” is a therapeutic photography project that I am doing with Verbena, with a focus on developing a collection of women’s visual stories which will become a photography exhibit for their organization.

Cancer Lifeline
www.cancerlifeline.org
I facilitate classes through Cancer Lifeline’s Healing Arts Center, a unique program based on the belief that we are all naturally creative, and that creative expression enhances well-being. Cancer LifeLine offers resources for cancer patients and cancer survivors, their families, friends, co-workers, and caregivers, who are all “people living with cancer.”

PhotoTherapy Centre
www.phototherapy-centre.com
Judy Weiser’s website, PhotoTherapy Centre, is the most complete and extensive resource and community center for PhotoTherapy, phototherapy, photo therapy and therapeutic photography. Judy is on my “most admired human’s list” and is a long-time mentor, from whom I have learned so much.

Judy is a licensed psychologist and registered art therapist interested in the nonverbal and visual aspects of communication and behavior (including cultural and gender differences). Listed in the Canadian Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, she has focused her twenty-plus years of counseling, consulting, teaching, training, and writing activities on two fields of specialization: PhotoTherapy techniques and the psychosocial aspects of HIV/AIDS (especially as affecting Native/Aboriginal people and communities).

Self & body image organizations and/or artists, projects that I admire

Rosy Martin
www.staffs.ac.uk/cgi-bin/ariadne/show?artist=martin_r
I have followed Rosy Martin’s phototherapy re-enactment work with women for many years. She continues to astound me with her edgy brilliant art.

Jo Spence

The late visionary pathfinder Jo Spence is another one of my body image heroines in the field of phototherapy.

bodyBODY: Aphrodite Raves
www.bodybodyproject.com
bodyBODY: Aphrodite Raves is a new organization that has popped up in Seattle. They are doing exciting work around women and body image. bodyBody offers a theatrical exploration of the women's body-image issue — with photography and video elements — based on interviews with women of all backgrounds, sizes, hang-ups and colors.

A Long Walk Home
www.alongwalkhome.com
Scheherazade Tillet is also someone to watch with her multidisciplinary project, A Long Walk Home, which integrates women’s issues within photography in a photo therapeutic way.

Nichole DeMent

Youth in Focus
www.youthinfocus.org
Youth in Focus teaches youth photography and gives them a community within which to develop this skill and share their feelings.

Make a Better Place
www.makeabetterplace.org
Much like Youth in Focus; however, their mission is to “introduce young people to photography and writing as a vehicle for personal enrichment and positive social change.”

Community Support System

School of the Seasons
www.schooloftheseasons.com
Writer, teacher, folklorist, writing coach, Waverly Fitzgerald has been a long time friend and support system for me and many others with her wonderful talents and approach to life. A number of years ago, she suggested that I look at my business in a seasonal way. That one suggestion (out of many) has been central to a shift in my business practice wherein I honor my own business rhythms by allowing focusing on the energy of each season and thus gain tangible results with more ease – because I’m in the flow!

Molly Gordon
www.mollygordon.com
Molly Gordon is a business coach and in spite of these times of “information overload,” I always take the time to read her newsletter each month. There I find ideas, tips and nurturing support for entrepreneurs who are striving to do work that is meaningful while still paying the rent.

Verve: A Women’s Network
www.vervewomen.com
It has been a great pleasure to watch owners, Casey Cram and Wendy McGuire build a women’s network empire. It started from a monthly newspaper—Verve: A Women’s Network—and has grown into workshops, salons, and currently a magazine. They are amazing women!

JPC Web Design Services
www.jpcwebdesign.com
Having a website has been on “my list” for a long time, especially since I am a visual artist. During that time, I never considered anyone but Joanna Powell Colbert to design my site. I have known and worked on different projects with her for many years and the combination of her artistic creative knowledge and skills along with her Capicornian business sense has served her (and fortunate people like myself!) well. She has held my hand (via email) all along the way during this project. She has not only been able to gently ease out the “essence” of what I abstractly saw for a website and put it into a concrete tangible form, but she has also been a website business coach along the way. I now have a better sense and an on-going resource to utilize my website as a main tool for marketing my business. What began as “a website for my business” has become an epic journey in which I finally gathered up all the parts that make up this interdisciplinary work that I do and created a visual business plan.

Great Publications!

The Beltane Papers: A Journal of Women’s Mysteries
www.thebeltanepapers.net/about.html
Eleven years ago a collective of women — including myself — made a dream come true and created The Beltane Papers: A Journal of Women’s Mysteries. It was a labor of love, blood, sweat and tears. Even though the original members moved onto other dreams & projects, this magazine continues to live today!

They are a great resource and very helpful with framing specialized art.

The Photo Closet
www.poundgallery.com
The Photo Closet, which is part of the Pound Gallery, has been my favorite community darkroom experience. I was a member for about three years and would be still if I did my own darkroom work! It’s also been great to see the Pound Gallery grow into a name to be noticed and reckoned with.

Benham Gallery
www.benhamgallery.com
I feel fortunate to have a gallery of the caliber found at Benham in Seattle. It is a great resource for photographers and photo aficionados to see many of the great names in photography.
